In 1989 the skateboarders of Charleston, SC began talking with city officials about building a skateboard park. Though the city seemed cooperative, the process is taking VERY long. Many skaters over the years took it upon themselves to build backyard ramps and DIY spots in different locations from abandoned buildings to slab foundations. Those spots came and went, some eroded by nature and time, some bulldozed by the owners of the land. But each time a spot was torn down, another started with a single idea, a seed from which other projects grew until the skate spot was a DIY skate park. This is the beginning of the next DIY spot in Charleston, which will have to suffice while local skaters continue to talk with city and county officials.
